Season review: Travis Pecoy

RESULTS: 8th, Lites; 249 points

STATS: 11 starts, 1 podium, 1 heat win

IN BRIEF: Making the jump from short-course off-road racing to GRC Lites was a big switch for PeCoy, who would have to deal with pavement more than he ever had elsewhere in his career. But the AF Racing Team driver progressed well throughout the 2016 season, shining in the second half of the year in particular, and set himself up for a bona fide championship charge in 2017.

HIGHLIGHTS: Washington DC and Atlantic City were both kind to PeCoy, as the California native began to find his groove on the East Coast. He won his first career heat and the last chance qualifier in DC, posting a career-best finish of fourth in the process. Four weeks later in New Jersey, he managed to top that with a second-place run, and added another LCQ victory in Seattle.

LOWLIGHTS: Every driver experiences a few growing pains as they transition into rallycross from other racing series, and PeCoy was no exception. His first six races alternated between main event appearances and missed finals, hurting his championship position. It wasn’t until the season finale in Los Angeles that he made it to both Lites finals in a doubleheader.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: “I think the driving mostly is there,” PeCoy explained at MCAS New River of his transition to rallycross. “In the asphalt I could definitely gain some speed, and I need to pick it up in some spots. I’m a little scared sometimes and I feel like I’m just going to start jumping through the corner, out of habit of six years of dirt racing. But it’s mostly getting car setups right, finishing the race and not blowing the motors—all things that have happened in past races.”
